Year 4/5 2021 - 2022

Miss Dunn

After working in law for ten years I realised that my true passion was teaching, as I had been privileged enough to work as a volunteer teaching English as a second language to young children. Following the successful completion of a Masters in Inclusive Education I then completed my PGCE training at Hull University. My first year of teaching was in a Year 1 class in Hull. In September 2015 I was thrilled to be invited to join the wonderful team at Westminster Primary School. I led the EYFS team when I first joined and I am now deputy head teacher at the school. I have enjoyed two years teaching in Years 5 and 6. This year I am looking forward to teaching in Years 4 and 5. When I am not working I enjoy spending time walking, canoeing and gentle bike rides! Please do not hesitate to talk to me on the playground or let me know if you need to make an appointment.

Miss Smethurst

My name is Miss Smethurst and I am a Teaching Assistant. I started working at Westminster Primary School in May 2016.  I thoroughly enjoy working here and the staff and children make every day enjoyable. Outside of work, I enjoy reading, spending quality time with family, socialising with friends, travelling and baking!

Mrs Farrall

I enjoy working with this class of children and looking forward to seeing what they achieve in Year 3. I'm also part of the school PTA and enjoy helping out at the school events. In my spare time I love spending time with my family.

Mrs Birt

I enjoy working at Westminster and like to work with all classes on art projects and different activities as well as supporting learning in class.

Mrs Davenport

I have worked at Westminster Community Primary School since qualifying as a teacher in 2010 and have experience of teaching in Years 1-6. Alongside my teaching role, I am also the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo) - a role which I greatly enjoy and enables me to work with children and families across the school as well as working with a range of outside agencies. Please feel free to come and speak to me before or after school if there is anything you would like to ask or discuss.

We follow the Pathways to Write scheme of work, developed by the Literacy Company. Pathways to Write is a proven methodology built around units of work which develop vocabulary, reading and writing skills through the mastery approach. The units provide clear detaliled lesson plans and resources linked to high quality texts to ensure engaing and purposeful English lessons.

The text the chidlren will be using in this first term is Queen of the Falls by Chris Van Allsburg.

Shared Reading

We follow the Pathways to Read scheme of work, deeloped by the Literacy Company. This is a programme designed to equip chidlren with key skils to move them through the reading process towards becoming competent and fluent readers. Lessons are linked to high quality and engaing texts. We use this scheme alongside the Patways to Write programme which provides a whole schoole curriculum approach with the opportunity for topics to link throughout the year.

This term's shared reading text is Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls by Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo

Reading

Children will also have weekly comprehension lessons. These lessons target specific comprehensions skills and provide children with the opportunity to familarise themselves with a range of comprehension style questions, which will start to prepare them for year 6.

Children will complete half termly accelerated reading tests which will determine the children's current reading age. It is also a diagnostic tool which outlines which areas the children need support with.

Chidlren are expected to read daily. I appreciate lives outside of school are busy, so I ensure there are daily opportunities to read in school. Each time they read, children are expected to make a note of this in their reading record.

I have attached a reading list for each year group of books I would like the children to read this year.

Maths

At Westminster we use Power Maths. Power Maths is a UK curriculum mastery programme designed to spark curiosity, excitement and nurture confidence in maths. Built around a child centred lesson design that models and embeds a growth mindset approach to maths which focuses on helping children to build a deep understanding of maths concepts.

At the start of each maths lesson all children will work on the curriclum year group they are in, they then will work in smaller groups where there will be a more targeted approach to teaching based on the groups needs and ability.

In the Autumn half term all children will be working on place value.

Science

Science in our school is very hands on and we ensure the children learn through inquiry. Where possible, science lessons are practical and involve experiments and investigations.

During the first half term in Autumn the children are learning all about States of Matter.

In the second half term of Autumn the children will thenn be learning about Properties and Changes of Material.

History and Geography

This term we will be looking at the geogrpaphy and history of North America and comparing elements of it with our own country.

Our enquiry question for this term is "What if we Lived in North America?"

French

The children during their time in years 3 and 4 really developed their French skills and I am looking forward to working with them this year.

French will take place daily as the approach is really helping children to embed their learning.

During the first half term we will be learning more vocabulary linked to talking about ourselves.

PE

This term we will be working with Cheshire Dance.
