Year 2 2020 - 2021

Miss Hall

This is my second year at Westminster Community Primary School. I completed my degree in the summer of 2018 at the University of Gloucestershire. Throughout my training, I taught across both key stages, but my passion lies with Key Stage 1. Please remember my door is always open so feel free to pop in.

Welcome to Year 2

Happy New Year! We are all ready and raring to go for another exciting term in Year 2. We will continue to learn the Year 2 curriculum and have lots more fun in the process. We will be continuing to focus on our independent learning skills and being encouraged to have a go on our own.

Home Learning

This page will be particularly useful if you find yourself in a position where your child needs to shield due to COVID or if we need to revert to home learning. I have attached some learning to the files section of this page. You can work through these with your child and of course, you can email me if you have any questions -

Core Subjects

English: In English we are going to be focusing on using punctuation correctly, especially full stops and fingers spaces, as well as planning out loud what we are going to be writing. We will also be learning when to use commas in our writing and focus on using the correct tense. We will continue to use expanded noun phrases and conjunctions to make our writing more exciting, as well as using intonation when reading our work outloud. Our focus text is 'The Dragon Machine' by Helen Ward. By the end of the unit we will be writing our own stories based around the focus text.

Roald Dahl is our Author of the Term this half term so we wil be reading lots of his stories and fidning out key information all about the author. We are already very excited to read some of his books after seeing and hearing the titles.

We will continue with daily phonics lessons this year to help support the childrens reading and writing. It is so important to listen to your child read regularly at home and discuss the books they are reading to improve their fluency and comprehension. If you have any questions regarding your child's reading or their RWI book then do please pop in and speak to me.

Maths: We are going to be learning maths through a new scheme this year called 'Power Maths'. The children will be guided through an input and then complete work with an increasing level of independence. We are going to be focusing on addtion and subtraction as well as learning all about money. There will be resources available in each maths lesson for the children to use to help support them in their maths learning.

Science: In science, we are going to be focusing on Animals and their Habitats. Throughout this unit, we will be looking at where different animals live and what features of a home they like, as well as making a bug hotel in Forest School to help create a new habitat for bugs and creepy crawlies.

Foundation Subjects:

We will be looking at the following in our foundation lessons:

  • History and Geography - our overarching question is 'Where in the World?'. Throughout this study, we will be learning about the 7 continents and 5 oceans of the world, as well as conducting a local historical enquiry about Chester Zoo and the Mottershead family.
  • Art - our artist that we will be focusing on this term in Mark Rothko. We will be recreating some of his famous pieces within our art lessons.
  • RE - we will be learning all about Judaism and how Jews celebrate
  • Computing - we will be focusing on using the internet safely
  • PE - we will be focusing on yoga and mindfulness.

Please read with your child at home as many times a week as you can. They will receive a new book every week which will be the book they have been reading in school in phonics sessions. Please ensure that these books are returned to school on swap day. Please also support them with their phonics, including their segmenting and blending of sounds.

The children will be given a homework menu at the beginning of each half term and your child will select which pieces of work they want to complete. Homework should be returned to school each week on a Wednesday so that I can see what amazing work you have produced! You will find a copy of the homework below.

Phonics Screening

Due to the school closure linked to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the children in Year 1 were unable to sit their phonics screening check in June. The government have announced that the children will now be sitting their phonics screening check in the Autumn Term so that each childs level of phonic knowledge can be assessed. Those children that do not achieve the required standard in the Autumn Term will be reassessed in June 2021 when the Year 1 check takes place. They will continue to recieve daily phonics sessions to support them with their lerning. Your support at home with this will be greatfully received. Please find resources attached, including CVC alien words. Any other questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask.

  • Our school day is 8:45 - 3:00. The children will enter and be dismissed through the blue doors outside the Year 2 classroom. Please be prompt for drop off and pick up due to the staggered times of other classes.
  • PE will take place on a Wednesday and Friday. Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit on these days. Your child must have full, correct PE kit.
  • Water bottles must be bought in each day and taken home each night to be washed.
  • Please make sure that everything belonging to your child is clearly labelled as they will be responsible for their own belongings due to the health and safety risks of sharing and mixing up of items at this moment in time.
  • Forest school will take place every other Friday. Please dress your child appropriately for this (warm clothing as it can get very wet and windy on the field) and in items that they can get messy in (the field can get very muddy in the winter months!). They will need a warm coat and wellies for each session. Wellies can be left in school.
