Year 2 2020 - 2021

Miss Hall

This is my second year at Westminster Community Primary School. I completed my degree in the summer of 2018 at the University of Gloucestershire. Throughout my training, I taught across both key stages, but my passion lies with Key Stage 1. Please remember my door is always open so feel free to pop in.

Welcome to Year 2

Home Learning

During this current time, we have been asked to move to remote learning. I will be live daily at 9:30am to speak with the children and complete a RWI phonics session. It's really important your child attends these sessions as we recap all learnt sounds and practice our reading and spelling. There are also daily English, Maths and a range of Foundation Subject activities that are to be completed each day which can be found on Google classrooms. You will access these with your childs log in details. Work goes 'live' at 8:30 each morning and can be submitted as soon as your child completes the activtity. A story will go be posted each afternoon to replicate the storytime we would normally have in the classroom.

We will need to work together more than ever to support your child's learning and progress and I am here if you need anything. You can message me on Google Classroom, email me at eleanor.hall@westminsterprimary.cheshire.sch.uk or call the school office and I will call you back as soon as I can. Thank you for your continued support at this very challenging time and I wish you all well.

We have been recaping these sounds in our daily online phonics sessions. Please watch the videos below and practice the sounds. Don't forget to read your reading book you have at home and the ones you have also been assigned on google classroom. We will continue with daily phonics lessons this year to help support the childrens reading and writing. It is so important to listen to your child read regularly at home and discuss the books they are reading to improve their fluency and comprehension. If you have any questions regarding your child's reading or their RWI book then do please speak to me.

Remote Learning for the Spring Term

Core Subjects

English: In our remote teaching for this term, we are going to be following the scheme Pathways to Write. We will be focusing on using punctuation correctly, especially full stops and fingers spaces, as well as planning out loud what we are going to be writing. We will also be learning when to use commas in our writing and focus on using the correct tense. We will continue to use expanded noun phrases and conjunctions to make our writing more exciting, as well as using intonation when reading our work outloud. Our focus text for this period of remote learning is 'The Dragon Machine' by Helen Ward. By the end of the unit we will be writing our own stories based around the focus text. Each day, a recorded lesson of myself will be uploaded to Google classrooms. This includes the teaching input, explaining the job for the day and modelling of what it expected in their English work that day. This is proving very popular with both parents and staff so this will continue for the period of home learning.

Roald Dahl is our Author of the Term this half term so it would be great if you could read some of his books whilst at home. He has written lots of different stories which make for great bed time reading.

Maths: We are going to be learning maths through a new scheme this year called 'Power Maths'. During remote learning, the maths lessons will follow the same process as we do when in class together. There will be a recorded video of myself introducing the learning for that day.The children will then be guided through an input, what we call the 'discover and think together' section and then they will complete work from their orange power maths books. As with the other activities set on Google classrooms, this maths work should be submitted when completed and feedback will provided.

Science: In science, we are going to be focusing on Animals and their Habitats. Throughout this unit, we will be looking at where different animals live and what features of a home they like, as well as making a bug hotel to help create a new habitat for bugs and creepy crawlies. All science lessons are uploaded to google classroom on a Thursday with a range of different activities each week.  Check out our knowledge organsier (found below in files) to look at everything we'll know by the end of the unit. You might like to watch these videos to help you with your learning:

Foundation Subjects:

We will be looking at the following in our foundation lessons:

  • History and Geography - our overarching question is 'Where in the World?'. Throughout this study, we will be learning about the 7 continents and 5 oceans of the world, as well as conducting a local historical enquiry about Chester Zoo and the Mottershead family. History and Geogrpahy work will be uploaded to Google classrooms each Tuesday.
  • Art - to tie in with our study of dragons in English and Chinese New Year, we will be creating lots of dragon art work. This will be the activity for a Friday afternoon and all instructions and guidance will be uploaded to Google classrooms.
  • RE - we will be learning about Christianity. Mrs Phillips sets RE and Understanding Me and My Place in the World (UMMPTW) each Monday and these will be uploaded to Google classrooms.
  • PE - during this unusual time, we will be focusing on a range of different PE skills. Some weeks we will be focusing on yoga and midfulness and other weeks we will be following along to a live cricket session with cricket coaches. The links to these lessons are on Google classrooms and go live each Wednesday.

Reminders!

  • Our school day is 8:45 - 3:00. The children will enter and be dismissed through the blue doors outside the Year 2 classroom. Please be prompt for drop off and pick up due to the staggered times of other classes.
  • PE will take place on a Wednesday and Friday. Please send your child to school wearing their PE kit on these days. Your child must have full, correct PE kit.
  • Water bottles must be bought in each day and taken home each night to be washed.
  • Please make sure that everything belonging to your child is clearly labelled as they will be responsible for their own belongings due to the health and safety risks of sharing and mixing up of items at this moment in time.
  • Forest school will take place every other Friday. Please dress your child appropriately for this (warm clothing as it can get very wet and windy on the field) and in items that they can get messy in (the field can get very muddy in the winter months!). They will need a warm coat and wellies for each session. Wellies can be left in school.
